Frequently Asked Questions
How do I ensure HDRH are integrated into my grant development process?
HDRH provide gratis pre-grant support for colleagues, although we are a small team so capacity is limited. We work closely with Research Initiatives & Innovation (RII), and the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) Research Office, to ensure our work is aligned to the grant development process. Refer to How We Work for more details.
Do you work with colleagues outside the College of Arts & Social Sciences?
Yes! We are hosted in CASS but exist to support colleagues anywhere at ANU. We welcome enquiries from all corners of the campus.
Can you provide access to computational and hosting infrastructure?
Our core infrastructure is hosted on the National Computing Infrastructure (NCI) at the Australian National University. We will work with you to determine the best and most cost effective infrastructure for your needs. We can help you access NCI resources, along with the ARDC Nectar Cloud, ANU ITS, and cloud services including Amazon Web Services (AWS). Refer to Research Infrastructure for more details.
Can you provide pump-priming support?
HDRH provide gratis pre-grant support for colleagues but capacity is limited. We recognise that some grant bids take time to develop, especially ones involving multiple partners. The Hub will announce two competitive rounds per year, providing support for the development of large funding bids. Support will include time for consultancy and prototyping time, and funding for workshops (including limited travel funding for research partners). The applications will be assessed by an independent committee.
Can you engage in prototyping?
We aim to be as flexible and creative in our process as possible. There are natural limits to this, but we do have limited capacity to engage in prototyping and experimentation. Our ability to provide that kind of support will be determined through preliminary analysis of the research project and approved by the Hub director.
HASS RSE is new. How did you develop your methods?
Our approach is influenced by the work of King’s Digital Lab (KDL) at King’s College London. Many of our documents, including our SDLC and our design and engineering templates, have been adapted from ones used in KDL. HDRH’s director, Professor James Smithies, was the founding director of KDL.
Can you support postgraduate students?
Not currently, although we hope to in the future as our capacity grows.
Can you provide basic websites?
Yes, we can help you produce a basic website to increase the impact of your research. We have a range of options, including free websites for ANU staff. These are necessarily limited and require staff to develop and manage the content themselves but provide you with a way to increase the impact of your research in a sustainable way.
Do you work with external organisations?
Yes, we welcome collaborative research projects, although such projects need to involve ANU staff members in substantive roles.
Can you direct us to teams outside HDRH that might be able to help?
Absolutely! We encourage colleagues to consider us a first port of call for their digital research. We’ll either help you ourselves or direct you to colleagues elsewhere at ANU (ITS, the Australian Data Archive, the Statistical Support Network, the First Nations Portfolio, ANU Scholarly Information Services, the Australian Dictionary of Biography, etc.). We can also connect you with freelancers and commercial and RSE teams across Australia and globally depending on your needs.
Can you help with product design and commercialization?
We have some experience in product design and working with commercial and government partners and are happy to help colleagues develop their ideas.
