Junran Lei is a Research Software Engineer in the HASS Digital Research Hub at the Australian National University. Her work sits at the intersection of digital humanities, social science research, and research software engineering. She has contributed to a wide range of projects involving machine learning and deep learning, including scalable qualitative annotation using large language models, optical character recognition, image classification, and language model training. Junran has designed and developed systems for collection management, geospatial mapping, metadata management, research tools, search engine, and language preservation, with a strong emphasis on supporting Indigenous and historical archives. Her work includes projects in data visualisation, mobile applications, and semantic web technologies, advancing the preservation of cultural heritage, the study of historical reading practices, and the discovery of fiction in archival records. She also worked as a researcher investigating the development of an open-source archival repository and preservation system for UNESCO. She is the co-chair of the Research Software Asia Australia Conference. Her outputs span software systems, scholarly publications, and collaborative projects.
